The Westernport Koalas Karnaval Club originated in Koo Wee Rup, Victoria on the 24th of August 1972 when 4 migrants from Holland decided to carry on the tradition of Karnaval from their homeland, with the co-operation of other Karnaval Clubs in Australia and overseas. These migrants , now the Westernport Koalas, held their first function in March 1973. The peak years of the Westernport Koalas were from 1975 to 1990 when functions brought a crowd of 500 to 600 people. Carrying on the tradition of Karnaval, we have celebrated or 1 X 11 and 2 X 11 anniversaries by holding grand Karnaval weekends where Karnaval Clubs come together from all across Australia. These Anniversary weekends generally consist of a social gathering/ball on the Friday and Saturday nights and a barbeque lunch on the Sunday. Each year the Westernport Koalas attend the Holland International Festival (the next one to be held on February the 22nd and 23rd at Sandown Park in Victoria) in which the club paticipates in the Karnaval night and our dance group often performs. In previous years we have also participated in the Oktoberfest, now we simply attend and join in the festivities....mmmm....beer..... Whilst the tradition of Karnaval in Australia is experiencing a slight decline, we hope this improves as the children of migrants (and their children) become involved in Karnaval. |
